New Telstra Government Mobile Plans

24 May 2017

As part of our objectives to deliver IT more effectively and efficiently as well as providing value to the UQ community, Information Technology Services has partnered with Telstra to gain access to their ‘Government Mobile Plus’ (GMP) plans.

The new plans provide better value for money for the university, resulting in a 29% cost reduction when compared to UQ’s spend on mobile phone plans in 2016.

Currently, there are about 1,800 existing services across UQ, which are managed across 80 different phone plans. This initiative will reduce the number of plans to 13, making the choice of plan simpler and the management of plans less time consuming.

The plans all offer unlimited national calls and SMS text, meaning that UQ mobile subscribers will no longer need to worry about the number or length of calls or texts.

The overseas roaming process has also been automated with activation occurring on a one-off basis with UQ Mobiles, rather than prior to each individual journey. The plans also offer better rates for voice and data use in many countries making it easier and cheaper to use mobile phones, on the new Telstra plans, while overseas.

The new plans are immediately available and all existing accounts will be transitioned to the new plans by the 25th May 2017 and there will be no disruption to mobile services. Existing account holders will not need to do anything.
