LabVIEW graphical development has revolutionized the development of scalable test, measurement, and control applications.  Regardless of experience, engineers and scientists can rapidly and cost-effectively interface with measurement and control hardware, analyze data, share results, and distribute systems.

The University of Queensland, through the School of Engineering Electronic Instruments Laboratory, has procured a UQ-wide National Instruments LabVIEW Site License for Academic & Research use.

The cost of LabVIEW is currently met by the EAIT and Science Faculty. All UQ users requiring LabVIEW access for academic or research purposes are welcome to use the software but restrospective contribution from their organisational units may be asked for depending on usage amount.

Who can use it?

The LabView site license is available to all current employees and postgraduate students of The University of Queensland who possess valid UQ Login credentials and who are based within the State of Queensland.

Any UQ staff member or student can use LabVIEW under the terms of the Campus License from any UQ campus in Queensland.

Home use and detached licences for staff and postgraduate students

Use at home for Fulltime staff and Post Graduate students is included however not for undergraduate students.

Users will either need to connect to the Licence Server either directly or via VPN (visit to download the VPN software) or obtain a Detached Licence by contacting to allow you to run LabVIEW.

Detached Licences are administered by the ITS Licensing & Maintenance and, as with all LabVIEW software, must be used according to the terms of the Licence Agreement.

To request a detached licence the software must first be installed on your computer.

Once the software is installed do the following to find your computer ID;

  1. Open NI License Manager found in Start » Programs » National Instruments » NI License Manager
  2. Go to Options » Display Computer Information. The computer ID will be displayed.

Email both the computer ID and the computer Name to along with your request.

You will receive your detached licence by return email.

Conditions of Use

The license makes almost the entire LabVIEW suite of applications available to all academics, students & researchers for teaching or non commercial research use but NOT for use in commercial applications.

Can I sell a LabVIEW VI/executable to a third party, either directly or as an integral part of a piece of equipment?

No. The Site License is for Teaching & Research use only. Any VI’s or executables destined for use in a commercial application MUST be generated from a Commercially Licensed copy of LabVIEW. For details email

Licence Type

Renewable annually. The LabView site license period runs until 28 September 2018.
