Who can use it?

All current UQ staff members or enrolled students can use Matlab for no charge on any UQ owned computer under the terms of the TAH Licence.

Home use for staff

Current UQ staff are able to use Matlab on their private home computers.

Home users on non-UQ network will need to connect to the central licence server via the VPN over internet. Visit to download the VPN software.

Home use for students

Postgraduate and Undergraduate student use is permitted on privately owned computers via a separate Student Matlab TAH licence

Conditions of Use

For University of Queensland teaching and non-commercial research purposes only. Overseas use is not permitted apart from conference and short term fieldwork.

Please note that the restriction in the TAH Agreement prohibiting use of the TAH Programs “in a cluster, grid, Web server, server farm, or other similar scheduled environment” has been removed.

To view the Matlab End User Licence Agreement (EULA) and a copy of the TAH agreement, please click the buttons below. You will be asked to login with your UQ account.

Licence Type

This is a Total Academic Headcount Licence - Campus Option and is renewable annually. The licence period runs from 01 January to 31 December each year. More information on this type of licence is here.

How do I install the software? (on UQ computers)

Staff using UQ computers managed by ITS can self-install this software application using the Microsoft Software Centre.

For other UQ computers, please contact your local IT support team to arrange installation. If you’re unsure who that is, please contact ITS Servicedesk

Please click the button below for manual installation steps

Obtaining a copy of Matlab

For existing installations, Matlab licences can be borrowed (checked out) for up to 30 day intervals on UQ laptops and private home computers when connection to the Licence Manager is not possible. Please see Borrowing Matlab licence pdf guide for assistance.

Individual (standalone) licences for UQ owned computers that cannot access the Licence Manager via the UQ Network can be obtained by contacting your school or faculty IT support. Please provide them with the computer's Operating System, The HostID (MAC address or Volume Serial Number of C:) and the Matlab Version/Release as part of this request.

Known Problems

  • Bug Report ID 1374124 for R2016a
    • Matlab product activation loop occurs. Toolboxes may not be availalable.
  • Solution - Please download the R2016a patch after installation.
  • Bug Report ID 1090500 for R2014b
    • Files in current directory are sometimes deleted when exiting MATLAB
    • MATLAB may crash when manipulating blocks and lines in a Simulink model after creating a subsystem
    • MATLAB may crash on selection if you create an annotation when zoomed to 40% or less
    • Mouse pointer may vanish in the Simulink Editor when using a trackpad or Apple Magic Mouse on Mac OS X, and result in a crash
    • Quickly navigating through deep subsystem hierarchies may crash MATLAB
    • Models containing Simscape blocks in subsystem variants may cause MATLAB to terminate unexpectedly
  • Solution - Matlab installers after January 14th 2015 have all been patched. Alternatively the patch itself can be downloaded from ITS Software Download site . Patch instructions are available here
