Purchasing desktops, laptops and tablets
Staff can purchase desktops, laptops and tablets via UQeMarket, from the following authorised suppliers:
Standard models are offered at bulk pricing rates so are significantly cheaper. They also ship with UQ software pre-loaded and will be supported by your IT support team. Accessories and other small IT items may appear on UQeMarket from other suppliers whose prices are outside our management. We recommend due diligence in price-checking other suppliers' products.
If the devices on UQeMarket don't meet your business needs you can request a custom quote.
ITS and UQ Procurement have negotiated improved pricing and delivery times for UQ standard desktop and laptop computers and monitors.
The changes to the ordering process are outlined below:
- Choose a UQ standard computer or accessory from the refined catalogue at UQeMarket. Delivery time for these items is expected to be 3-5 business days.
- You will notice the standard catalogue items available are reduced.
- Any items not part of the standard catalogue will require approval before they can be ordered and delivered. See Non-standard purchases and custom quotes for more information.

Non-standard purchases and custom quotes
If the standard devices listed on UQeMarket don't meet your business needs you can request a custom quote for a product that meets your specific requirements from one of our vendors.
- Dell: email Matthew Wogan at Matthew_Wogan@Dell.com
- Aliva (Lenovo): email sales@aliva.com.au
- CompNow (Apple and Microsoft): email uq@compnow.com.au
All non-standard and custom purchases will require approval before they can be ordered and delivered. This can take 4-12 weeks. Approval applications can be lodged by submitting a request to purchase a non-standard computer (staff login required). Improvements to delivery times will follow around mid-December once the contracted suppliers are able to build up stock levels to support this. If you have any queries, please submit an IT request.
Purchases made using external funds such as grant funding are not exempt from the approval process.
There is no set criteria for approval. Approval is based on consideration of the provided business requirements. To assist with processing your request, please provide specific details of software used and known requirements to use that software.
Once approval is provided, please attach this approval to the requisition in UniFi so that the Finance Officer assisting can process your request.
For organisational units supported by Information Technology Services (ITS), please note that ITS only supports standard computers listed within UQeMarket, unless you have received prior approval for your purchase.

ITS has noticed a rise in the number of support tickets logged relating to laptop thermal issues. These issues include:
- noisy cooling fans
- uncomfortably high surface temperatures
- reductions in laptop performance.
It is now highly recommended that any UQ staff member looking to purchase a laptop also purchase a laptop stand at the same time to try and mitigate these issues.
You can find a number of different types of laptop stand on UQeMarket. If you're having trouble choosing one, here are some tips:
- Apple MacBook laptops generally do not benefit from laptop stands due to their unique cooling design.
- Look for a stand that leaves the base of the laptop as open as possible.
- Laptop stands with fans offer little to no benefit compared to a passive laptop stand.
- Avoid stands that completely cover the base of the laptop as this gives no benefit to air circulation over just having the laptop sitting on the desk.
- Avoid stands that claim they act as a heat sink, as this would require metal-to-metal contact to conduct the heat from the laptop to the stand. This is a bad idea for several reasons.
- While you can achieve the same effect by propping up the back of your laptop with something like a book, this is not recommended as it could damage the laptop, or the item used to prop up the laptop.
