Many file types, especially common video, document, graphics, and audio file types, are supported by many different programs, several of which you may have installed on your computer at the same time.

Windows can only open one program for a particular file extension automatically, so if you like to change the default file association for a file here is what you need to do.


  • In Explorer find the file you want to open
  • Right Click on the File and Select Properties

Under General you can see in this example that it’s a PDF File and it Opens with Google Chrome.

  • To change this Click Change..

Next you will see a list of programs that can open the file

  • Select the Program you want to use and Click OK


  • After clicking ok you will see the change in the properties pop up, the file now Opens With Adobe Acrobat DC

  • Click OK to Exit Properties

Your File will now open in the program you have chosen.


  • Right-click on a file that uses the file type you'd like to change the default for.
  • Click on Get Info in the pop-up.

  • Click Open With if the section isn't already expanded.

  • Click the dropdown and choose an app.

  • Click Change All...

  • Click Continue when the Finder asks you if you're sure.
