Chalk & Wire advised they were encountering access issues from 12pm midday on Sunday 05/08/2018. Clients were unable to access the ePortfolio from Blackboard. When a student or staff member attempted to access the ePortfolio from their Blackboard course site, they received an error message. The UQ Network Environment is aging with approximately 65% of the network being older than 7 years. This has resulted in an increasing number of faults, many of which have been problematic in fault finding due to unique symptoms caused by the aging equipment. As the age of our Infrastructure has been increasing, so has the amount of data traversing it. The existing equipment is experiencing saturation and competing for throughput, which often results in poor performance for both corporate and research activities.

ITS is upgrading the core network infrastructure, removing bottlenecks contained within the current hardware configuration in order to provide a high speed, low latency environment with (40/100 GB) capable hardware designed for both corporate and research functions.

Through this implementation, requirements for demanding technologies such as Ultra High Definition video streaming to DNA sequencers or brain imaging machines can be fulfilled.

This Sunday we are undertaking Phase III of the migration work to the new core. Phase II was completed last Sunday (15 Jul 18) with some very minor issues that were resolved before progressing.

As a result from that workflow, we are undertaking Phase III earlier. Sundays (22 Jul 18) change will now begin at 0900 Hrs and be completed at 1600 Hrs. The critical work will begin at 1300 Hrs, where there may be approximately 4 service interruptions of around 30 seconds each. Lab testing has been very positive with interruptions of less than this.

Once this Phase is complete, UQ will be operating via the new core network and we will begin to migrate buildings to the new core. We will provide notice before we begin to migrate each building in your area.

Several DCs at the St Lucia site are to still to be decommissioned as part of the AD refresh project. As a move towards decommissioning, the following AD Domain Controller is to be demoted:

uq-adstl4.uq.edu.au

This DC is currently servicing the St Lucia site, but is to be decommissioned due to end of hardware life. It is not hosting additional services and newly promoted DCs are now available on the nextgen infrastructure to handle requests.

NOTE: Demotion of this DC will have an impact on services that are set to target it directly for the provision of Active Directory Domain Services, kerberos or ldap. It is strongly recommended for any services that have been configured in this way to either use DNS to identify available Domain Controllers, or target the highly available FQDN ad1.cc.uq.edu.au.

The VMWARE cluster is stable and storage has been restored. ITS staff are ensuring virtual guest are operational. If you manage applications that were affected, please ensure you check to ensure services have been restored. Root cause is still being investigated with vendor support.
