Phase 1 of the student (and alumni) email upgrade to a new and improved platform, Microsoft Office 365, was completed in late September. Approximately 140,000 email accounts were successfully migrated. Phase 2 is also on track for deployment in January 2014.

Why Office 365?
Student and alumni email is delivered through Microsoft’s cloud email service. Its new Office 365 product, which UQ has now adopted, offers our students (and alumni) the following key benefits:

  • Similar applications to the UQ staff platform
  • Widely used software applications, which may assist students as they transition into employment
  • Access to new features and capabilities including cloud hosted and streamed application services

How does this affect our students and alumni?
In September students and alumni were notified of a change to the log on URL giving them access to an Office 365 mailbox account with 25GB storage – compared to the 10GB offered previously. Additionally, students now have a personal Microsoft account providing access to services such as Messenger and Skype.

From January 2014 our students will also experience a new look mail client, optimised for touch access on mobiles and tablets.
